Second Temple context
Why the world of Jesus mattersBy the first century, Jewish life had been shaped by exile, synagogue, and occupation. Pharisees guarded holiness in the home, Sadducees controlled the temple, Essenes withdrew to the desert, and Zealots waited for a revolution. Into that world Jesus announced a kingdom that did not fit any of their categories.
Roman roads, Greek language, and a shared longing for the Messiah created the conditions for the gospel to travel fast. Reading the New Testament with this world in view turns familiar verses into news again.
