Spiritual Growth
A trellis, not a cage
Rule of Life
A rule of life is not a set of rules you must keep to earn God's favor. The Latin regula meant a trellis — a structure a living thing grows on. You are naming the few rhythms that make room for God in an ordinary week.
Your rule of life
Saved privately to your accountPrayer
When and how will you meet God?
Rest
What will you stop doing, and when?
Work
How does your work become offering?
Community
Who is walking with you?
The season I am in
Be honest about capacity.
Learn the practice
“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me… and you will find rest for your souls.”
Matthew 11:29
- Begin small. Three sustainable rhythms beat twelve aspirational ones.
- Cover four spheres: prayer, rest, work, and community.
- Name the season you are actually in — a rule for a parent of a newborn is not a rule for a monk.
- Review it quarterly. A trellis gets rebuilt as the vine grows.
